This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is “A promise is a promise: Time for action to end violence against women.” We wanted to support this global movement by devoting an entire issue of PASTE.COM to men and women doing just that. We’ve partnered with Half the Sky, a book and documentary series from New York Times journalist Nicholas Kristof and his wife Sheryl WuDunn. In the film, a Masaii woman named Rebecca Lolosoli clearly lays out the challenges that many women in the world still face: “The rights we want: We want to choose our husband; we want to own the land; we want to go to school; we don’t want to be cut anymore; we want also to make decisions; we want to participate in politics; we want to be leaders; we want to be equal.” We’ve enlisted some of the most effective women activists in this arena—people like Somaly Mam and Helene Gayle—along with some of our favorite actresses who’ve lent their time and influence to the fight. We’re an entertainment magazine, but like these actresses, we don’t believe that lets us off the hook when it comes to talking about more important issues. We begin with this week’s cover subject, Olivia Wilde, who excels as both an entertainer and an activist. Visit our special International Women’s Day issue of PASTE.COM.

It’s one for the history books—more than 75 different stars were photographed for Vanity Fair’s 19th Hollywood Portfolio, shot by Bruce Weber as the famed photographer’s definitive tribute to the town. Enfolding Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, Amy Adams and Jonah Hill, Selena Gomez and Alan Arkin, Weber’s vision called for a variety of talent—of both the two- and four-legged variety. The cover: Ben Affleck and Bradley Cooper (impishly smiling in a bear suit and a gorilla costume, respectively) flank America’s sweetheart Emma Stone. Oscar winner Affleck cemented his status as Hollywood’s in-demand director with Argo, which received seven Academy Award nominations, including best picture, while Cooper’s Silver Linings Playbook received eight nominations, including Cooper’s first for best actor. Youngest-ever best-actress nominee Quvenzhané Wallis also appears on the cover gatefold along with Olivia Wilde, Kerry Washington, and Eddie Redmayne.

Condé Nast Traveler has named Olivia Wilde as one of their “Visionaries 2012″ for her work in Haiti with Artists for Peace and Justice. Check out her profile, three videos from their visit and 7 photos below!

Who
Actress and co-founder of the first free secondary school serving the poorest in Haiti.

Because
At 28, she sits at the grown-ups’ table of philanthropy, using her hip status to inspire a new generation to fight for the poor.

Photographed
By Frank Ockenfels with kids in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on April 28, 2012.

The Story
“I just had a great conversation with Bill Gates,” says Olivia Wilde, laughing at the improbability of that. But the truth is, these days the actress is rubbing elbows with philanthropic heavyweights from Bill Clinton to George Clooney, and of course Mr. Gates. She asked him for advice on how best to focus her efforts beyond Haiti, perhaps as a UN ambassador: “He said, ‘No, invest your time in Haiti and know your subject well.’ ”

When Wilde returned to Port-au-Prince this past spring, there was tangible evidence of her commitment: the Academy for Peace and Justice, the first free secondary school in the country. With funds raised by Artists for Peace and Justice, the school was built by Haitians in just two months and is run by the St. Luke Foundation for Haiti, which has operated in the country for 25 years. In October, 1,200 students are expected to be enrolled, most from Cité Soleil, the poorest slum. “We started so small,” says Wilde, “and this is such a grand gesture.” Classrooms carry name plates: Russell Crowe, Daniel Craig, Barbra Streisand, Sean Parker, Penélope Cruz—all of whom made pledges of support of $70,000 a year, usually for seven years. Wilde hopes to spark young activists. “I’m really excited about the next generation,” she says. “Philanthropy is no longer just for the rich.”

The Big Trip
“Cité Soleil in 2009. I had never seen poverty like that. But Haiti is also so beautiful—it’s important to remember that it’s not just about tragedy.”

Just weeks removed from the theatrical release of her latest film “People Like Us”, Olivia Wilde garnered herself a little overseas exposure by covering the July 2012 issue of Emirates Woman.

The 28-year-old actress brought her sophisticated charm to the magazine scenic spread while dishing about everything from her Revlon gig to having no regrets about her divorce from ex Tao Ruspoli.

On being a spokeswoman for Revlon:
“I’ve always admired Revlon and their commitment to giving women the confidence and tools they need to feel beautiful, both inside and out. Creatively, Revlon has never been afraid to push the envelope, which is important to me. It’s exciting to join a company with a big heart and big ideas.”

On being in such a competitive industry:
“The main hurdle that sums up all the others is how to understand and accept learning rejection.”

On getting divorced from Tao Ruspoli:
“The mark of a good marriage is partnership and feeling inspired by your spouse. The end is not necessarily the tragedy. Living unhappily, that is the tragedy. We’re friends; his family is my family.”
